“They brought him a demon possessed man, who was blind and mute, and Jesus healed him” Mark 12:22.

Demons. We don’t talk much about them, but judging by our Halloween-crazed, gore-loving culture, we still spend an awful lot of time thinking about the demonic and deranged.

The Bible is clear that demons exist. It’s clear that many of the people Jesus encountered were suffering – mentally, physically, and spiritually – from evil spirits. But that’s where it ends. There is no bloody description, no graphic images left behind to haunt our imaginations. Foaming at the mouth is about as vivid as it gets. The lasting picture left by the Bible’s description of evil spirits is of Jesus reaching out his holy hand and completely overpowering the demons.

Day in and day out, we see the power of evil in the world. No one needs to remind us of the presence of demons. But we do – from time to time – need to be reminded of the Healer who merely opens his mouth and the demons flee. We do need to be reminded of the Man who came to die a bloody and gory death at the very hands of evil, so that you and I don’t have to be afraid of the demons. We do need to be reminded to keep our eyes, ears, hearts and minds out of the darkness and into his glorious light.
